1. Clone Projects

Most project templates start from an existing project that needs to be cloned, either fully or partially. Therefore, we have developed a straightforward way to get started with the 'Project Clone' feature.

Step 1 of 3: Select Source Project

  1. As Jira admin or app power user, click ‘Clone Project’ button on top of the app.

Step 2 of 3: Customize clone configuration

By default, Project Cloning will replicate all configuration, share schemes, clone components versions & issues and even assign the same users to their project roles from the source project. Read more about cloneable project configuration and project content: 2. Template Settings & Boards

In Step 2 of 3 you can change what should be cloned, by opting out of some settings or selecting different options.

Confirm with ‘Next’ at the bottom of the modal

Step 3 of 3: Create cloned project & optionally save clone configuration in a project template

Specify the Project name and Project key of the new project.

Optionally, you can select ‘Save configuration as Project Template’. Doing so will additionally create a project template based on the configuration specified in Step 2, making it easily reusable and even possible to allow non-admins to create projects based on this project template. Checking this option will show an additional text field to specify the ‘Template Name’

Click on ‘Create’ to create the project clone and, if selected, the new project template.

Clone History

When projects get created form project templates, the app will store the create history inside the template. In case you do not create a new template from the ‘Project Clone’ feature, the create history will be accessible with the ‘Clone History’ button.

This button will open a modal, that displays the ‘Creation date’, ‘Project key’ and the ‘Creator’ of projects that the app created via the ‘Clone Project’ feature without creating a template.

  2. In the ‘Create Project Template’ modal. Enter a ‘Template name', optionally ‘Template description’ and specify the 'Template type’.

2.1 Custom templates for Jira software projects, or Jira work management projects are initiated by selecting a base project source project’ that the template settings are based on.
You can customize the template settings later individually.

2.2 Select Jira project type ‘Software development’ or ‘Work management’ and specify further which native template you want to base the template on.

3. Click on ‘Create Jira native templates for ‘Software development’ or ‘Work management’ are initiated with Jira native templates that you can later enhance with additional configuration, project content or customized project create permission.
